Our patients go through a lot during their time with us, showing the most incredible amounts of bravery every single day. One of these children is five-year-old Amaru from Great Barr.

Amaru was diagnosed with kidney failure at birth, and has been a patient at our hospital for two and a half years. He comes in three times a week for dialysis.

Mum, Natasha, described her son as ‘the bravest boy she knows’. She said: “Amaru doesn’t completely understand what dialysis is or why he needs it, but he knows he has special lines on his body which make him better.

“He’s a very lively, hyperactive child so sitting for long periods of time can be difficult for him. The school are amazing at keeping him occupied, they come round every day we’re here and spend an hour or so with Amaru - this keeps him occupied and gives him something to concentrate on.

“I’m so proud of him for being brave throughout his operations and procedures – he really is so inspiring. We’re excited to be supporting the Big Bandage campaign this year and hope other children and families will take part in the event and do something brave too.”

To join Amaru this Big Bandage Day.
